Graveyard Wanderings

A graveyard. This technically isn't a complete nature experience, but oddly enough it is one of my favorite places to go. The old 18th century church with it's crimson red bricks and the black cast iron fence in front of it. This church is a methodist church off the back road that I live on back home in Virginia. I love how the white molding around the deep oak door stands out against the brick building, that is perfectly flawed. The stain glass windows displaying our savior and the son glint in the sun as the sun prepares to set. Every Christmas Eve my family and I go to the candlelight ceremony at this little church. The congregation consists of maybe 15 people and we practically double it when we come. It's always odd experiencing other religion's traditions because they are similar to my traditions yet still different. Everything about it is interpreted differently. The bible's are laid out differently, as well as the hymn books. Inside the little church there are wooden pews where we all squeeze into on Christmas night to remember the true meaning of Christmas. This however is not my favorite part about this site, the graveyard in fact is my favorite. I have created many memories in that graveyard, when ever I am having a bad day, for some reason going and sitting amongst people who may or may not have figured out life, calms me. My friends all think I'm weird because they are dead people, but I really like the fact about thinking about people who went before me. The stones are all carved out of stones found in the Appalachian mountains, and most of the names are unreadable because they are all so old. The grass that grows around the tombstones is not maintained well, but I kind of like that. I like that these bodies were given back to the earth and the earth welcomes them with embraced arms, unlike another graveyard where there is a caretaker who seeks to tame nature back from claiming those bodies. The view is simple, there is a grove of trees to the left of the graveyard, and there is a shed in the back right corner, and then besides that just the tombstones in this little field in the middle of nowhere, but it is my favorite place to visit.
